Buffett declared that he would contribute more than 80 percent to charitable foundations. In 2020, Buffett increased that amount to 99 percent. The principal beneficiary was the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, founded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his then wife Melinda, which was primarily focused on issues of world education and health; Bill and Buffett were in close relationship since the early 1990s. The three Buffett children, as well as the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (named after his wife) were among those that were the recipients of donations. They were focused on women's reproductive rights, provided college scholarships, and had additional charities. In 2010, Buffett and the Gateses came up with the Giving Pledge, an invitation to wealthy people to donate the majority of their fortune to charities.
